The Small Town as the “Real” America

This section examines how the small town is constructed as the “real” America in popular American sports films. While referring to a range of films, my main focus is on Hoosiers, an immensely successful 1980s film set in tiny Hickory, Indiana, in which a disgraced former college basketball coach is offered a last chance at his career through coaching the high school basketball team. Seeking redemption for his former failings, Coach Dale leads the Hickory Huskers to the state championship. In this and other films like it, the small town is constructed as the real America by establishing a strong sense of place and (local) community and by evoking a strong sense of nostalgia for a mythical golden age of America, which is inherently associated with the Puritan settlers, agricultural life, and, by extension, the birth of the American dream.
